The movie’s protagonist Christian Bale has indeed turned villain, this time for Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. An imposing antagonist. The story follows the comic book plot and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is back. There’salso the outrageous humor that is unique to director Taika Waititi. Yet, Love and Thunder, despite being an efficient standalone film, does not quite match the previous Thor installment, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been an integral part the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over 10 years, however his standalone films failed to hit the mark completely or missed the target. While the story of the origins of Thor (2011) was an okay start, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was an utterly awful film. However, every list of top five MCU films should contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) without a doubt. There was a lot of anticipation ahead of the movie’s release because of the return of the Taika Waititi/Hemsworth partnership.
When Gorr (Bale) and Bale, who seeks the extinction of gods after being disappointed by one, chooses to striking New Asgard to steal the Stormbreaker, Thor has to stop the god killer by joining forces with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who has changed into Mighty Thor. The plot is straightforward, unlike Marvel’s previous films, and the performances are excellent in this film. Hemsworth plays the title character, who’s in the middle of a crisis. However, Bale as well as Portman are exceptional. The pre-title credit scene establishes is a good example of what Bale can accomplish. Gorr could be the next Thanos within the MCU. Bale adds a sense of eerieness to the character , but not much else.

Marvel also offers its own acting in all of the appearances. Alongside the complete Guardians of the Galaxy team there are Matt Damon, Sam Neill and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor as well as Thor. We also get Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of the Asgardian play and the director of the play. Waititi who, has, since Ragnarok directed the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, returns to his favorite genre again. There are hilarious scenes like the noisy goats Korg’s narration of Thor’s backstory Thor breaking his legs, Valkyrie becoming the brand ambassador for Old Spice…
There’s also the running joke of Thor trying to find his Mjolnir, but being scared by Stormbreaker’s jealousy. Unfortunately, these gags, although effective, come at the expense emotions, and reveal the wafer-thin plot as well. Thor: Love and Thunder is a film that explores many different types of love, from father-daughter bonds to complex romances between estranged lovers… There’s a connection between Gorr losing respect for Rapu and Thor becoming disillusioned at Zeus (played in this film by Russell Crowe). The possibilities are endless, however…
There are many reference to films such as Harry Potter and Interstellar, as well as Easter eggs. We get a shot of the dead god, Falligar, taken straight from comics. We can see Hemsworth dressed in the original Thor costumes that comic book fans will recognize. As he fights Zeus, Thor reveals his true colors. We are also shown a tattoo of ‘RIP Loki’ that has the helmet of the trickster on the back of our Viking. We’re introduced to the evil Necrosword and given how Mjolnir and Stormbreaker appear to have an independent mind is fascinating to see new weapons that possess the strength to control people.
This is what we saw in Shang Chi’s ten rings as well as Ms. Marvel’s magical bangle as well as the Ebony blade during the Eternals post-credits scene. The phrase “Gods do not empower you, but they will use to use you” from the new show by Marvel, Moonknight, feels very relatable. A bit of Valkyrie’s loss during war to her most trusted friend as well as Korg falling for another Kronan man is included.
We’re reminded of the Ragnarok color palette in the opening half, however the majority of the second half takes place in the dark world of black and white. The fact remains that the action scenes that are monochrome are quite enjoyable.
